The Bajrang Dal on Saturday questioned whether the education department has imposed restrictions on wearing religious threads or Raksha Bandhan bands by students in schools.

Bajrang Dal leader Viraj Desai has alleged the Headmistress of a Cuncolim school has reportedly told students not to wear Raksha Bandhan bands or sacred threads on their hands after certain days.

Preliminary inquiry conducted by the Cuncolim police, however, has revealed that one of the students was coming to the school with sacred threads on his hand. The parents of the student were reportedly called for an inquiry.

Viraj said he called on the Headmistress to find out why there is objection to the students wearing Raksha Bandhan band or religious threads. “The Headmistress said the students can wear the Raksha Bandhan bands for a week. But, I want to question whether any ban is imposed on students from wearing the religious threads when they come to the school”, he said.

He has demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio clarify on wearing of religious threads or Raksha Bandhan bands by students.

When contacted, Cuncolim PI Diego Gracias said an inquiry is being conducted by a Police Sub-Inspection after a complaint was lodged by Viraj Desai and others.
