It was a great day for several residents living in houses at Mangor after a 42-year-old issue of road access through the Naval area was finally resolved on Thursday.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar had intervened in the matter and convened a joint meeting with the Navy and the State administration to resolve the issue through an MoU after a joint site inspection of the area. Salkar had carried out an inspection with South Goa Collector Ashvin Chandru, Mormugao Dy Collector Bhagwant Karmali, Naval officials and residents.
Later speaking to reporters, Salkar said a road would soon be constructed through the Naval area by the State government for the betterment of several houses in Mangor. "There are many houses near Ayaappa temple and also a residential building where many Goans live but they were facing an issue with access to the highway from Naval area and had to take a longer route,” said Salkar.
“This issue was going for several years and there was no solution to it with the matter going to the court where both parties were presenting their sides and the case was dragging for a long time," said Salkar.
“We have come to a solution where we will sign an MoU with the government, wherein locals will get their access that they deserve in the form of a road and Navy will give us the land needed for the road.
“We have succeeded in requesting the Navy to have a sympathetic approach towards local civilians and understand their problems because without a proper access, these houses cannot be attended by ambulance or a fire brigade during an emergency.”
Salkar said they have also managed to resolve another issue in Mangor which has a very narrow road access. “With both these major issues resolved, there will be cordial relations between the Navy and the civilians," said Salkar.
