The redevelopment of the Mapusa Municipal Market will come at a price - an estimated Rs 35.75 crore.
The projected cost for the first phase is estimated at Rs 19.50 crore, while the second phase is estimated at Rs 16.25 crore.
Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar had made a provision of Rs 20 crore as a special grant for development of Mapusa in the 2017-18 Budget.
The Mapusa Municipal Council is expected to pass a resolution to take up the first phase of redevelopment Mapusa market and utilize the Rs 20 crore grant for the purpose.
Giving top priority to safety, the redevelopment plan of Mapusa Municipal market includes strategically installed close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at various points around the market. The cameras will be controlled from an information centre located at the main gate.
Plans are also afoot to strategically place firefighting hydrants all along the roads inside the market.
According to the plan, no temporary vendors or kiosks will be allowed on the ring/loop road in order to provide easy access for fire brigades to move around in the market in case of emergency.
Currently, temporary vendors occupy every available open space in the market, resulting in chaos and inconvenience to shoppers who visit the market.
As per the new redevelopment plan, space has been created for 300 vendors with a provision for spill out of temporary vendors (those arriving for Friday market). Presently, around 250 vendors occupy space at various spots in the market.
"Uniformity in architecture and signages throughout the market will give a sense of character to the market. We will make use of a lot of traditional material to maintain the traditional market look of the popular Mapusa market," said Ashwinikumar Prabhu, chief architect of the project.
