The fishermen were all smiles on Wednesday as this marked the first big haul of mackerel for the new season. With Pele and his team bringing in such a significant catch, it is expected that other local fishermen will start fishing in earnest from Thursday.
Recent rough weather had disrupted many fishermen’s plans over the past week. On Tuesday, a homemade motorised canoe capsized off Benaulim beach due to huge waves, though the fishermen aboard were unharmed.
Pele shared that this is the first time in the new season he has caught such a large quantity of mackerel. However, despite the successful mackerel catch, they did not manage to catch the prized solar shrimp. Pele explained that although the trip was primarily aimed at catching solar shrimp, they ended up catching mackerel instead.
In the first two days of the season, traditional fishermen had caught a moderate amount of solar shrimp before bad weather forced them to dock their boats on Benaulim coast.
