Covid claims 8 more lives, death toll @368; 590 new infections

Most of the deceased were co-morbid patients; active count stands at 5,513

Eight more Covid-related deaths were recorded in Goa on Tuesday raising the death toll to 368. Also, 590 new cases were detected taking the total active count of Covid cases in the State to 5,513.

A total of 29,343 cases have been confirmed in Goa so far of whom 23,462 have recovered.

The deceased persons include an 87-year-old man from Valpoi with diabetes, hypertension, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Parkinson’s Disease, an 83-year-old woman from St Estevam with diabetes, hypertension and Ischemic Heart Disease, a 79-year-old woman from Mangor Hill with diabetes, hypertension and cerebrovascular accident, a 69-year-old woman from St Cruz with diabetic nephropathy and hypertension, a 69-year-old man from Vasco with diabetes, hypertension and old pulmonary tuberculosis, a 60-year-old man from Chandor with no comorbidities, a 59-year-old man from St Inez with diabetes, hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease and a 32-year-old man from Kankavali in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra with liver cirrhosis and adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic disease which causes buildup of fatty acids in the brain. 

Five of the deaths occurred at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, two at ESI Covid Hospital in Margao and one at Chicalim PHC. 

Sadly, two patients succumbed within 30 minutes of admission at the hospital, one of whom did not have any comorbid conditions.


VETERAN ACTRESS ASHALATA DIES AT 79 OF COVID

PANAJI: Veteran Marathi film and theatre actress Ashalata Wabgaonkar (79) passed away due to Covid-19 at a Satara hospital on Tuesday morning. Her last rites will be performed at Satara. Survived by a son, Ashalata who hailed from Palolem Canacona, had acted in over 100 films and dramas in various languages, including Marathi, Hindi and Konkani.

Ashalata had contracted Covid-19 during the shooting of Marathi television show ‘Aai Mazi Kalubai’ along with 22 crew members who were shooting at Satara, according to Alka Kubal Athalye, an actress and producer of ‘Aai Mazi Kalubai’ and was admitted to a hospital in Satara. She was put on ventilator support as her oxygen levels were low.

Ashalata who was popular in theatre for Konkani and Marathi plays, had acted in 100 plus plays. Starting her career with the famed Marathi musical (sangeet natak) Matsyagandha, Ashalata’s debut in Hindi film was with Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Apne Paraye’ in 1980 for which she was nominated for a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress. Some of her hit Marathi films were Umbartha, Sutradhar, Navari Mile Navryala and Vahinichi Maya. Trained in singing under Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, again a legend from Goa, Ashalata had authored a book on music called ‘Gard Sabhovati’.

The veteran actor’s death has raised questions within film and theatre fraternity over whether to allow senior citizens to shoot for films, web series and television during the current pandemic situation.


Rising Covid trend continues in Bardez; over 95 new positive cases reported

MAPUSA: With over 95 new positive cases reported on Tuesday, Covid cases continued to rise in Bardez.

The primary health centres along the coastal belt contributed majority of the cases, with Candolim PHC reporting 36 and Siolim PHC recording 22 new cases.

In Candolim PHC, 12 persons tested positive in Pilerne, followed by Calangute and Reis Magos registering six cases each. Sangolda reported five cases, Candolim three and two each in Nerul and Saligao.

Similarly, nine persons tested positive in Chapora, six in Canca, four in Siolim and three in Assagao under the jurisdiction of Siolim PHC.

Health Officer of Mapusa urban health centre, Dr Cheryl de Souza informed that 20 positive cases were reported in her jurisdiction. There persons each were tested positive in Cunchelim, Khorlim and Duler, two each in Angod, Morod, Carrasvaddo and Ansabhat and one each in Shetya-vaddo, Gaunsavaddo and Altinho.

A total of 13 positive cases were reported from Colvale PHC – Tivim (6), Colvale (5) and Assonora (2).

According to the Aldona PHC Health Officer Dr Preetam Naik, seven cases were reported in the primary health centre – Aldona (3), Pomburpa (1), Moira (1), Bastora (1) and Nachinola (1).


21 infections in Pernem, count nears 1,300

PERNEM: Covid cases continued to rise and reached closer to the 1,300 mark, after 21 new cases were detected positive on Tuesday. The new cases were detected in Mandrem (1), Morjim (3), Keri (2), Parcem (1), Paliem (1), Pernem town (1), Virnoda (2), Tuem (7), Agarwaddo (1) and Carsarvarne (2).

Of the total 1285 Covid cases in Pernem taluka, there are presently 245 active cases, while 12 have succumbed to the virus and over 1,000 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus.

Mopa (210), Mandrem (147), Pernem town (103), Tuem (87), Dhargal (77), Arambol (69), Korgao (68) and Parcem (55) are amongst the worst affected villages.

Meanwhile, Covid tests on workers at the Mopa airport construction site is being conducted by a private medical team and test results are being sent from Munbai, which has led to a delay in ascertaining the exact number of Covid cases at the project site.
