The Porvorim National Highway Residents Association (PNHRA) has demanded a change in design of the elevated corridor on NH 17 proposed by the State government at Porvorim.
This was resolved at a meeting at the Socorro panchayat hall on Friday, after PNHRA Secretary Ashok Dias put forth a presentation of the government’s proposal for the proposed elevated corridor and compared it with their alternate proposal.
PNHRA Joint Secretary Umesh Sabnis said they would put forward a number of demands before the government regarding the elevated corridor on NH-17.
They have demanded that elevated corridor should connect the Atal Setu and not from Delfino Mart as is being proposed by State government, should have four lanes instead of six lanes and should restrict within a width of 18 mtrs and or as per design of Atal Setu.
The NHRA also said the elevated corridor should rest on a Centre Pier Design and the height should not be lesser than 8 metres.
Other demands are that land holdings affected by this elevated corridor/land acquisition have to be considered and offered Special Zone with commercial/residential area of 300 FAR and additional height and roads beneath the elevated corridor should be declared as service roads with setback/command line/building line to be 12 metres from the centre of the road.
“The State government has proposed the elevated corridor of six lanes resting on side piers of a height of five-and-half metres. The side piers will create lot of problem to the business establishments and movement of vehicles.”
“Hence, the PNHRA has suggested a centre pier structure with four lanes. The elevated corridor should be connected directly from Atal Setu to the High Mast at the old market junction at Alto Porvorim junction,” said Sabnis.
Former Aldona MLA and PNHRA President Fatima D’Sa suggested that traffic coming from Mapusa and Panaji should be diverted to alternate roads so that work of the elevated corridor can be done smoothly.
On the occasion, D’Sa felicitated newly elected Socorro ZP Member Kartik Kudnekar.
PNHRA Vice President Dr Ravindra Chodankar, Socorro Sarpanch Sandeep Vazarkar and panch members of Socorro were also present at the meeting.
