Painful memories of cattle and other livestock perishing during floods in Sattari last year have prompted growing demands for information on floods and inclement weather to be supplied to ensure the safety of hundreds of animals at goshalas and other animals sheds in the taluka.

The Goshala Management Committee Chairman Hanumant Parab has sent a letter to the deputy collector and mamlatdar of Sattari in this connection, requesting information on severe weather and floods.

Concerns have been raised as there have been heavy rains in Sattari taluka these past few days and there is a possibility of floods in various parts of the taluka.

Last year, floods claimed the lives of several animals at a goshala in Nanus-Sattari, evoking anger among animal lovers as prior information about these floods could have prevented the deaths.

In his letter, Parab has demanded that advance information on weather must be provided to goshalas frequently to ensure that adequate measures are taken to ensure the safety and security of animals.

When contacted, Parab said the painful memories of losing hundreds of cattle and other livestock in the floods last year were still haunting them.

“We do not want a similar tragedy to repeat. At present, there are about 420 cattle in goshalas and our prime responsibility is to protect them. We want prior weather information so that if there is heavy rain and the possibility of floods, we can move the cattle to safer places,” said Parab.
