A 19-year-old girl hailing from Manipur was killed while two others were seriously injured when their car rammed into a stationary trailer close to Goa Airport at Dabolim in the wee hours of Monday.

According to sources at Vasco police station, the deceased, Eliza Devi Laishram, was a trainee at a reputed hotel in South Goa.

“The accident was reported at around 2 am. There were three persons in the car which included the driver, the deceased girl and another trainee student.”

“The car was moving towards the airport when the driver may have lost control and rammed into the parked stationary trailer near the airport. The impact was such that the deceased girl, who was seated in the rear seat of the car lost her life, while the other two occupants sustained grievous injuries and have been shifted to GMC hospital,” the source said.

Vasco police conducted a panchanama at the site and further investigation is being carried out by Vasco PSI Swapnil Naik.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Monday assured that action would be taken against vehicles parked by the roadside.

“I am going to direct the transport department to launch a special drive against all these parked trailers because they are now being parked on the airport road as well and it has already caused a fatal accident.”

“The company booking these trailers should provide them with parking space. All trailers and trucks moving in and out of the port are also parked by the roadsides and main highways and this cannot be allowed.”

“I will direct department officials and Traffic Police to launch a special drive and continuously book them till such a time that parking on roadsides become uneconomical to them. I condemn such irresponsible behaviour of motorists to park vehicles on roads thereby causing accidents. I  will ensure strict action is initiated,” said Godinho.

Meanwhile, Chicalim Deputy Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav said a resolution would be taken by Chicalim panchayat to take action against vehicles parked by the roadside.

“We had requested the transport department to act on these parked trailers and notices were also served to them, but vehicle owners continue to park by roadsides,” said Yadav.

“Two years ago, two labourers had lost their lives after dashing against a stationary truck, while a person lost his life after dashing against a parked vehicle in another incident six months ago.”

“We have seen many cases of people losing their lives after dashing against stationary vehicles and we request the transport department and traffic police to act on these vehicle owners. We will also pass a resolution in the Chicalim panchayat not to allow parking of vehicles by the roadside and we will issue notices to them,” said Yadav.
