The life-size statue of Indian Nationalist and socialist leader, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia finally stands stall at the historic Maidan as the beautification project is nearing completion.
The contractor on the advice of the consultant engaged by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) had installed Dr Lohia’s statue on a small pedestal inside the maidan. In fact, Lohia’s statue was not visible from outside the Maidan as compared to the past when the statue stood tall at the historic place named after the socialist for giving a call to the people of Goa to rise up against the oppressive Portuguese regime.
After the issue was highlighted by the media and upon representations made by the freedom fighters, the consultant was forced to raise the height of the pedestal. The statue has since been installed at the Maidan.
Meanwhile, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat along with GSUDA officials and the contractor inspected the Lohia Maidan on Thursday following complaints made by artist Vishal Kakode and others over the opening of a door at the backdrop leading to the green room.
After the inspection, Kamat said he has informed the GSUDA official to instruct the contractor to close the door opening on the backdrop of the stage wall and ensure that the beautification work of Lohia Maidan is done aesthetically and by taking utmost care of the historic place.
