Torrential rain on Tuesday led to severe flooding over the Haltar Nullah Bridge near Manturga on the Khanapur-Hemadaga road, causing traffic disruption between Goa and Belagavi.
Approximately five feet of water submerged the bridge, forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement on this key route.
Motorists and daily commuters are now diverting through the Manturga-Asoga-Khanapur route as an alternative.
However, challenges remain on this stretch as well. Near the Khanapur railway station, ongoing underground railway work on the Asoga road has caused waterlogging, creating a pond-like situation.
Adding to the concern, soil erosion along the roadside is worsening. Locals fear that without immediate repair measures; this alternative road could also become unusable.
In response to the relentless downpour that continued through Tuesday and into the night, local authorities announced a one-day holiday for all schools and colleges in Belagavi and Khanapur talukas on Wednesday.
Belagavi and Khanapur taluka continues to face heavy rainfall. The Malaprabha River is now flowing in full spate, reflecting the scale of the rainfall impact.
According to official data, Khanapur taluka recorded between 105 to 106 mm of rainfall at various locations within a single day.
Local residents and commuters are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with official traffic advisories.
