On Dussehra Day, the Margao Municipal Council added three garbage compactors to its fleet of garbage trucks, which is expected to streamline waste collection in the commercial capital.
The three garbage compactors, equipped with a leachate collection tank, was launched by PWD Minister Digambar Kamat in the presence of Margao civic chief Damu Shirodkar, councillors and officials near the Municipal building on Thursday.
The three compactors have cost the civic body a staggering Rs 1.41 crore.
While complimenting the Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar and the team of officials for procuring the technologically driven vehicles for garbage collection, Kamat said, “This only goes to show that the MMC is moving towards technology.
He, however, took the occasion to caution the drivers manning the garbage compactors to ensure the vehicles and the system is handled with care and diligence. “Treat the vehicles as your very own,” Kamat said, while urging the Municipality to conduct training session for the drivers to take care of the vehicles.
He added: “The vehicles will benefit the people and the city. Citizens will no longer complain of stink raised by the leachate overflowing on the roads from the garbage compactors. But the drivers should drive the vehicles with responsibility.”
Saying that the MMC should work for the welfare of the common man, the PWD Minister thanked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane for clearing all decks for the procurement of the garbage compactors.
In his address, civic chief Damu Shirodkar said that constant follow up done by the PWD Minister has helped to bring the three garbage compactors on the roads. He also thanked Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai and other officials for their contribution in completing the procurement process.
