Ahead of the Grade 10 March Board examinations, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has declared that to avail the benefit of newly introduced compensation scheme, the student must secure a minimum of 10 per cent marks in the external theory and Board practical components, wherever applicable.

From the current academic year onwards, the Board has replaced the traditional grade marks with a new compensation scheme for Grade 9 and 10 aligned with the National Education Policy. The scheme will be made applicable to only those students who are remarked as “needs improvement”.

In a circular issued, Board Secretary Vidhyadatta Naik said that the compensation scheme can be availed in a maximum of two subjects. To qualify, a candidate must obtain at least 10 per cent marks in the external theory paper and the Board practical component.

The Board explained that if an external theory paper carries 80 marks, a minimum of eight marks is mandatory, while for a 70-mark paper, at least seven marks are required. Similarly, for a Board practical component of 20 marks, a candidate must secure a minimum of two marks.

The Board further stated that these criteria will also apply to sportsperson candidates. However, the requirement of securing a minimum of 10 per cent marks in external components will not be applicable to skill-based subjects or school-based assessment subjects.

According to the scheme, as announced earlier, students will have six regular subjects and four new skill-based subjects. If a student fails in any two of the regular subjects, but gets a minimum of 65 per cent in two of the skill-based subjects and at least 50 per cent in the other two skill-based subjects, he or she will be declared to have passed.

The circular also reiterates that grades secured in school assessment subjects will be forwarded to the Board.

From the current term, the ten subjects are divided into Scholastic subjects – Language 1, 2, 3, Social Science, Science and Mathematics and Skill-based subjects are Interdisciplinary area, NSQF/Others, Art Education and Physical Education.
