Tricolour unfurled across islands in Arabian Sea ahead of R-Day

A flag-hoisting ceremony was held on Tuesday morning across various islands in the Arabian Sea, off the Baina Coast, marking the build-up to Republic Day and underscoring the strategic importance of India’s coastal frontiers.

The ceremony witnessed the participation of multiple stakeholders, including officials and staff of the forest and fisheries departments, personnel from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, police, NCC cadets, harbour coastal police, local fishermen and members of the Bogmalo Panchayat. The event was led by DySP Roy Pereira and PI Radesh Ramnathker.

The tricolour was unfurled at key island locations amid patriotic fervour, with coordinated presence from civil and security agencies highlighting the collective responsibility of safeguarding coastal and island territories. The participation of local fishermen and youth added a strong community element to the initiative.

Speaking to reporters, DySP Roy Pereira said the exercise was being carried out as per instructions issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. He explained that all States have been directed to ensure flag hoisting on islands in view of the upcoming Republic Day on January 26.

“We have come to the island along with stakeholders such as the Forest Department, Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, NCC cadets and the police. It is a proud moment for all of us to be here and hoist the national flag,” Pereira said.

He added that the islands hold strategic significance from a security perspective. “These islands are located at sensitive points, and it is essential to ensure their security. Our presence here today is part of that responsibility,” the DySP stated.

Officials said such coordinated programmes also help strengthen inter-agency cooperation while fostering national pride and awareness among coastal communities ahead of Republic Day celebrations.
