Following the incidents involving structural failures in government schools – one involving a false ceiling collapse and another falling ceiling fan, the government has ordered a structural audit of 337 State-run schools.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed the House on Tuesday that the Public Works Department (PWD) has so far conducted structural audits of 575 government schools, out of which 571 are declared safe. “PWD report pointed out four unsafe government schools. Accordingly, the schools are shifted to nearby rented premises,” he said.

Sawant said that PWD is now instructed to take up a structural audit of the remaining 337 government schools which are spread in Ponda (107), Bicholim (70), Canacona (61), Bardez (60) and other talukas.

The Chief Minister informed that except GPS Poriem-Sattari and GHSS Sanguem there are no cases of injury reported and there are no incidents of collapse of school infrastructure such as roofs, false ceiling, fans or other building components.

In October last year, a girl student was injured in Poriem when a ceiling fan fell on her while five students from Sanguem Higher Secondary School got injured due to a false ceiling collapse.

Replying further, Sawant said that the State is yet to implement the National Credit Framework (NCrF) in its entirety and it will be feasible only upon the completion of APAAR ID creation for all students.

“Accordingly, detailed guidelines for the measurement and accounting of learning hours shall be issued to schools only after the mandatory implementation of the NCrF is formally notified by the State,” he said.
