GSUDA finally fences MMC building under renovation

After facing flak, the Goa State Urban Development Authority (GSUDA) on Friday began fencing the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building which is undergoing renovation work.

The NGO ‘Goa First’ had filed a complaint with Mormugao Deputy Collector Sachin Desai demanding safety measures be taken up at the site of renovation work, including barricading and fencing of the area, to ensure people safety.

Goa First Convenor Parshuram Sonurlekar has thanked the deputy collector for swiftly acting upon the complaint against the MMC renovation work.

"We had complained against MMC for undertaking the repair and renovation works of the MMC building while not following safety measures and endangering the public and staffers at the government offices in the building.”

However, the GSUDA has now temporarily fenced the area with green cloth. We still demand a proper steel sheet fencing and security personnel on-site, besides a signboard displaying various permission and details of contractor, cost of works and time frame for completion of the project.”

“The government should not rush with projects without following proper SOPs and guidelines. We also hope that government offices still located in the MMC building will be shifted elsewhere," said Sonurlekar.
