Houses damaged in Amona as rains lash Bicholim taluka

Heavy rains have led to a sharp rise in the water level of Bicholim river.

Two houses were damaged and trees got uprooted at many places as heavy rains lashed Bicholim on Wednesday, affecting the weekly market and disrupting normal life in the taluka.

The Bicholim fire station stated that two houses were damaged in Amona when trees came crashing down. Firefighters were at work to clear the fallen trees.

Many areas in Bicholim were flooded on account of the heavy rains and in some places, waterlogging took place due to lack of proper drainages.

Amid heavy rains, water level at the Anjunem dam level has risen to around 80 metres.

A dam official informed that water is being released from the Tillari Dam and said people along the river banks have been asked to be cautious regarding a rise in river levels.

Under the guidance of WRD Chief Engineer Dnyaneshwar Sale Lakar, officials are keeping a close watch eye on the dam area as well as the rivers in Bicholim and Sanquelim.

Water levels in the Bicholim and Walwanti rivers have increased, but officials said the situation was under control.

Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye and Mayem MLA Premendra Shet habve been in contact with officials and emergency services in this matter.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant reviewed the rainfall on Wednesday evening and directed the emergency control room to remain on alert.

He has also instructed the local administration to take precautions to ensure that people are not inconvenienced under any circumstances.
