The season for transmission of vector-borne diseases usually begins with the start of the monsoon, but this year the number of dengue cases sharply declined in June.
According to official data from the Directorate of Health Services, the number of dengue patients in June has fallen drastically, with just 10 confirmed cases reported. In the same month last year, Goa had 60 cases.
Also, the tally of dengue cases in the first six months last year (January to June) was 176, whereas this year only 43 cases have been reported.
“Statistics clearly show that dengue is on the decline. Our efforts, including intensive awareness drives where we educate people to keep their homes and surroundings clean and free from water receptacles, have borne fruit,” said Dr Kalpana Mahatme, who heads the National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme in the State.
This year, the State had seven dengue cases in January, nine in February, seven in March, six in April, four in May, and 10 in June.
In June, six of the cases were reported in Mapusa, and one each in Candolim, Siolim, Porvorim, and Aldona.
