‘Better late than never’ aptly sums up the story of Dr Jai Prakash Tiwari, who on Wednesday occupied a new office as he took charge as the Dean of the Goa Medical College and Hospital.
Hitherto heading the premier health institution’s Nephrology department, Dr Tiwari got down to business from day one, holding a nearly hour-long meeting with heads of all the departments on Wednesday afternoon.
“The meeting was very cordial. He suggested that emphasis be laid on the GMC’s educational and research side to raise the standard and national ranking of the institution,” one HoD who did not want to be identified told The Goan.
Dr Tiwari himself politely declined an interview, claiming that since it was his first day at the Dean’s office, he would need some time.
Two years ago, the State government’s Personnel Department had promoted Dr Tiwari as the Dean of GMC & H. However, the order issued on April 4, 2022, was held in abeyance the next day, without any specific grounds or explanation.
Now, the Personnel Department on Tuesday issued a fresh order which specified that the order holding his promotion as the Dean is withdrawn, paving the way for him to take charge of the top office at the GMC.
His predecessor, Dr Shivanand Bandekar, stepped down on June 30 on superannuation.
