The iconic Vishant Theatre in Aquem, Margao’s busy commercial area, has returned in a modern new form as Z Square Multiplex, led by the third generation of the Zantye family.
Former MLA Pravin Zantye said the newly opened multiplex has been upgraded to modern standards and will offer a movie experience on par with top theatres in the country.
The multiplex has two advanced screens — one with 217 seats and another with 116 — and will screen films daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
The Zantye family took over the former Vishant Theatre in 1998. Once known for its 750-seat hall, the theatre was a major entertainment spot in Margao before it closed for two and a half years for renovation. It has now reopened as a stylish and modern multiplex under the Z Square brand.
Pravin Zantye urged the people of Margao and South Goa to support the new facility, promising quality service and an enjoyable viewing experience.
The Zantye family once managed 13 cinema screens across Goa, though the number has now come down to five. Over the years, some theatres have changed purpose — Cine Lata in Margao has become a party and conference hall, while Paradise Theatre in Cuncolim is being redeveloped into a shopping complex.
The Z Square Multiplex was inaugurated on Sunday by PWD Minister Digambar Kamat, in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, Pravin Zantye and other dignitaries.
Recalling his memories, Kamat said, “Cine Vishant was started by Shantilal and Vinod before it was taken over by the Zantyes. It’s rare today to see such Goan traditions being carried forward. I’m happy the younger Zantyes are continuing this legacy.”
He praised Pravin Zantye for keeping alive the cultural tradition set by his father, Harish Zantye.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar appreciated the younger Zantyes for continuing the family legacy, calling their work an inspiration for today’s youth.
Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade also congratulated the Zantye family for blending tradition with modern cinema through the Z Square brand.
