In a major boost to the diagnostics space in the State, India’s only multinational chain of diagnostics centres - Metropolis Healthcare – opened its laboratory in Panaji on Tuesday.

Located at Dr Shirgaonkar Road adjacent to Hotel Nova Goa, Metropolis Healthcare’s Panaji lab is capable of performing not only routine medical tests but also some of the semi-specialised and specialised tests in Goa itself.

Metrolpolis, according to its Head - Goa ops, Dr Pradip Mahindrakar, is also planning on expanding its reach in Goa by opening centres in Margao, Mapusa and Vasco post which samples of patients who avail these branches will be sent to the Panaji branch. Metropolis Healthcare has a provision to send their staff to the location of people to collect samples in case they aren’t able to reach the lab. As of now, this facility is available only for people living in and around Panaji.

For super specialised tests, the lab can send the samples to their Mumbai facility and get the tests done. Routine tests include blood sugar test, lipid profile and liver functioning tests. Specialised and semi-specialised tests include thyroid tests and hormone tests.

Highlighting the fact that there’s hardly any medical test which a pathologist performs and Metropolis Healthcare can’t do in India, Chairman, Dr. Sushil Shah said, “We do 4,500 different types of tests in India while an average lab doesn’t do more than 100-150 types of tests. There is hardly any test for which we have to send samples outside India. In fact, we are the referral lab in a sense that we perform a number of medical tests for top private hospitals that lack appropriate infrastructure.”

Metropolis Healthcare has 125 labs across India. Besides that, the company even has labs in UAE, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius and Ghana.
