The word curry may set your mouth watering, but Jolynn Carneiro is quick to clarify at the onset that Nonsense Curry has nothing whatsoever to do with cooking, apart from the fact that she is a big foodie. "Maybe, it's worms I don't know, but I love to eat all the time," quips the young lady whose fun and quirky personality makes her hard to miss.
And it is this cool craziness about her that translates into an array of offbeat home decor and fashion products that form a part of her brand Nonsense Curry. "I chose ‘nonsense' because that is how I perceive life in a very ludicrous manner and ‘curry' because it denotes my Goan origin," explains Carneiro.
"My products have both elegance and quirky elements. The elegance comes from my alter ego who is the more softer and chic side of me while the quirkiness is just me being completely crazy and trying to be funny. So it is two different contrasting things," she adds. The nonsense all began last September as she was motivated to make people smile a bit more. "If you look around the world today there is so much distress and people are all wound up. I want to evoke a smile and bring happiness to people through my products. At the same time I have infused fashion into them as I am a huge fan of the Rockabilly and Vintage fashion styles."
After having her first exhibition at the Yuletide Bazaar, Carneiro's Nonsense Curry continues to garner a good response from people with products like shady holders(lamp stands) cowbells(neck pieces) moon-tiffin (bag), edge(pouches), fluffs (throw pillows), soda poppers (bottle openers), head wraps, button badges and more. And interestingly, the foodie has chosen the brinjal to be the emblem of the brand. And there's a fun story behind it. "Whenever I was out with my friends and they would act stupid or blonde I would tell them, ‘You're such a brinjal'. It was always brinjal for some reason and I never picked up on it until my friends pointed it out to me. So of course I had to make it the emblem," she says laughing.
Her personal favourite product though is the cowbell neck piece which she considers a trendsetter. "The first time I made and wore it, I realised that I looked like a cow wearing a bell," she says on the unique name behind it. " All the cows in India are all decked up so well during festivals especially and look so royal with ghungroos and ribbons etc. So I guess in a way I was inspired by this."
All of her products are hand painted and handmade and she especially enjoys working with Khadi material. For her lamp shared and stands she uses terracotta pots and employs the services of a potter. As of now apart from her social media pages you can check out her products online at lovethisstuff and also find them at Carneiro's Frontier, Mapusa and Whispering Cafe, Ucassaim. Carneiro also plans to get into clothes, shoes, backpacks and is currently working on a project connected to animals. She dreams of having her own store someday but as of now she is just winging it while keeping the learning process alive and collaborating with other designers. In fact she signs off with some advice for other designers. "Anyone can do anything as long as you put mind to it and cut off the drama from your life and just focus. I mean if I can sell poop on pillows (painted) surely anyone can do anything," she says.
