The rare and visually striking ‘Sita’s Braid’ orchid (Rhynchostylis Retusa) has begun blooming across parts of Goa and the Western Ghats, captivating nature enthusiasts, photographers, tourists and botanists alike. The plant is currently in full bloom in forested regions, with its long cascading clusters of pink and white flowers enhancing the natural beauty of the landscape.

Popularly known in English as the “Foxtail Orchid,” Rhynchostylis Retusa is the state flower of Assam. It is found in the forests of Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and several northeastern states of India. Owing to its ecological importance and cultural significance, the orchid is regarded as a symbol of biodiversity and natural heritage.

Unlike parasitic plants, the Foxtail Orchid is an epiphyte that grows on tree trunks and branches for support without drawing nutrients from the host tree. The plant usually blooms between April and June, producing long drooping flower clusters adorned with numerous pinkish-white blossoms. The flowers emit a mild and pleasant fragrance, adding to the charm of the forest environment.

The flower clusters resemble a woman’s braided hair, which is why the plant is popularly known as “Sita’s Braid.” In some regions, it is also associated with local folklore and traditions, further enhancing its cultural appeal.

SYMBOL OF NATURE’S RENEWAL

The blooming of ‘Sita’s Braid’ is considered a sign of the onset of the monsoon season across Goa, Konkan and the Western Ghats. The orchid thrives in humid conditions and is commonly seen in forest interiors and hilly areas, particularly in Keri, Sattari, Chorla Ghat and surrounding regions.

Nature lovers and photographers often venture into forests during this season to witness and capture the spectacular floral display.

ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE

Environmental experts note that the Foxtail Orchid flourishes best in clean, healthy and pollution-free forests. Its presence is often regarded as an indicator of a well-preserved ecosystem. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, thereby contributing significantly to forest biodiversity and ecological balance.

However, habitat destruction, deforestation and indiscriminate collection of flowering plants have led to a decline in the orchid’s population in certain areas. Conservationists emphasize the need for public awareness and stronger protection measures to safeguard this rare species for future generations.

SIGNIFICANCE

It blooms mainly during the months of April to June and plays an important role in maintaining forest biodiversity. The species is also considered a natural indicator of the monsoon season and holds deep cultural and traditional significance in many regions.

Despite its ecological and cultural value, it requires greater conservation efforts and increased public awareness for its protection.
