Party warns of protests over plan

The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) has criticised Goa University Vice Chancellor Harilal Menon for reportedly stating that there is a need to do away with the domicile certificate for staff recruitment.
Addressing reporters in Panaji on Tuesday, RGP chief Manoj Parab said that Menon had then gone on to add that, for the Goa University rank to go higher, there was a need to do away with the domicile certificate for recruitment in the University.
“RGP condemns this statement and demands that the Vice Chancellor withdraw the statement, failing which our party will protest outside Goa University,” Parab warned.
“This statement seeks to undermine our local languages Konkani and Marathi, and also seeks to undermine the capability of Goans, and recruit non-Goans in the University,” Parab opined.
He added that RGP will never allow GU to recruit outsiders as Goans are already suffering due to the high unemployment ratio in the State.
Parab further said that Goa University needs to concentrate on what is wrong with the GU system due to which its ranking is slipping.
“We also studied in the same University and at that time, the ranking was higher. So, the need of the hour is to put the system back on track and not give stupid excuses for the slump,” Parab added.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Viresh Borkar said that it is the Goa government which is funding Goa University, and only Goans have to be recruited. “Goa University belongs to the Goans and it has to remain as such,” he stated.
“Our Goans are more than capable of achieving results, but the lacunae in Goa University have to be weeded out to improve education,” Borkar added.
Borkar then slammed Menon for the statement and said that the issue will be raised in the forthcoming Assembly as well.
