South Goa sets up vigilance teams to tackle illegal bullfighting

PANAJI: In a bid to crack down on bullfighting, which is banned in the State, the South Goa district collector has constituted dedicated teams to act swiftly against such activities.

The committees are constituted based on the directions of the High Court of Bombay in Goa.

The circular issued by the Office of the Collector & District Magistrate, South Goa District stated that each committee will comprise the Mamlatdar, Police Inspector, a designated Veterinary Officer, and representatives from animal welfare organisations and bull handlers. These teams will operate in coordination at the police station level to ensure quick response and enforcement.

The initiative covers key police jurisdictions including Margao Town, Maina Curtorim, Colva, Fatorda, Cuncolim, Verna, and Mormugao. Veterinary officers from government-run vet centres in Navelim, Majorda, Sonsodo, Varca, Cuncolim, and Vasco have been assigned to assist the teams.

Animal welfare organisations such as Dhyan Foundation and Shikeri Gaushala will also support the effort, with designated contact persons available to assist during field interventions.

The District Magistrate has directed all members to maintain high alertness, particularly in areas identified as vulnerable to such activities. Officers have also been instructed to ensure backup arrangements and appoint link officers when necessary to avoid any delays in response.
