Varca sarpanch commits to special meet on village carrying capacity
Varca Sarpanch Flavia Barretto briefing the media on the issue of special gram sabha to discuss the village carrying capacity.

The Varca village panchayat has on Tuesday said the panchayat is committed to hold the special gram sabha to discuss the issue of carrying capacity of the village.

Flanked by Varca panchayat members, Sarpanch Flavia Baretto told the media that the panchayat will fix the special gram sabha once the resource person to guide and explain to the member on the village carrying capacity is fixed.

Barretto’s statement assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that a group of Varca residents led by social activist Shohail Furtado called on the Salcete Block Development Officer on Monday and submitted a memorandum demanding the extra ordinary gram sabha.

The Varca sarpanch pointed out that though the gram sabha had resolved to hold a special meeting to discuss on the village carrying capacity, the same could not be held due to the intervening village feast. “We had decided to call for a special gram sabha to discuss the village carrying capacity and we are committed to hold the meeting. We have never said that the special gram sabha will not be held,” she added.

Barretto, however, said the panchayat has spoken to the BDO, adding that the special gram sabha will be held no sooner the resource person is decided.

Meanwhile, the sarpanch informed that the ordinary gram sabha of the Varca village panchayat will be held later this month.
