Director of Transport P Pravimal Abhishek, IAS, on Friday said it is the fundamental duty of motorists to comply with road safety norms and follow laid-down traffic rules.
He further said that enforcement mechanisms through technology and evidence-based enforcement would go a long way in implementing safety norms.
Speaking at a road safety awareness and recognition programme organised by the Directorate of Transport in association with VVM’s Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, Margao, as part of the culmination of National Road Safety Month, he said the PWD and the Transport Department are working to install AI-based traffic signals at 92 locations in phases.
“It is the responsibility of individual motorists to wear seat belts and helmets, drive within speed limits, and follow the rules laid down. Following these rules is the fundamental duty of every motorist. They need not be told by anyone what needs to be done or which rules to follow. It is their fundamental duty to follow the rules,” he said.
Stressing enforcement, Abhishek expressed confidence that technology and evidence-based enforcement via AI-based traffic signals and cameras would help ensure effective enforcement of traffic rules.
On improving public transport, he pointed out that the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd has moved a proposal to the Central Government along with the Department of Urban Development to add to its fleet of electric buses. “The KTCL has submitted a proposal to procure 200 additional EV buses. We are waiting for the response. I am confident that the proposal will get sanction from the Centre,” he added.
To another question, Abhishek laid stress on spreading road safety education through schools to sensitise schoolchildren on road safety aspects. “Our focus is to spread awareness on road safety and traffic discipline in schools,” he added.
