The office of Sub Registrar, Salcete is in the news once again – this time for a fake marriage certificate purportedly issued by the office that came to light on Thursday.
MARGAO
Taking no chances, and with the marriage certificate purportedly issued in 2015, much before the incumbent Sub Registrar took over the office reigns, Sub Registrar Chandrakant Pissurlekar lodged a FIR with the Margao police calling for a detailed probe into the episode.
The incident came to light after the Department of Employment Exchange dispatched the marriage certificate of a woman to the office of the Sub Registrar for verification. “Upon verification, it came to light to there was no registration of the marriage of the woman on that particular date,” Pissulekar told The Goan.
Sources in the know said the police arrived a little late at the Office of the Employment Exchange when the woman was spotted around noon. Commenting on the episode, Pissurlekar said the fake marriage certificate purportedly issued by the Sub Registrar’s office is a serious matter and needs to be investigated in detail.
“I suspect that it might be the handiwork of a gang involved in fleecing gullible citizens by offering fake certificates,” Pissurlekar added.
Stating that he has lodged a FIR with the police to unearth the racket of issuing fake marriage certificates, Pissurlekar underlined the need for the police to take the investigations to its logical conclusion.
The Salcete Sub Registrar office has been in the news over the last couple of months, with residents complaining of huge delays in the issuance of births and deaths certificates by the Planning and Statistics Department.
Though the department had later deputed around nine officials to tide over the manpower shortage, the situation has not yet return to normal, with certificate seekers being forced to take repeated rounds of the office for a birth or death certificate.
