Girls outshine boys; 17 govt high schools secure 100% results
PANAJI
Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) registered a record pass percentage of 90.93 per cent at its Secondary Schools Certificate (SSC) Examination, with girls once again outperforming boys this year. Of the 19,867 students who appeared for the exams, 18,066 were declared as passed, of which 9,178 were girls and 8,888 were boys. The examination was conducted from April 1-20 at 26 centres across the State. Nearly 149 schools secured a pass percentage of 95 per cent and above, of which 75 schools managed to secure 100 per cent results. Interestingly, 17 government high schools managed to secure 100 per cent pass percentage. GBSHSE had introduced four skill-based courses under the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) scheme in 38 government high schools across the State. The subjects included IT/ITES, automobile, healthcare and retail. Of the 1,161 candidates who appeared in these subjects, 1,053 passed, while 153 students cleared the SSC exam with the aid of these marks.Elaborating this further, GBSHSE chairman J R Rebello said, “These courses under NSQF were introduced as a seventh subject. So one course was opted as an additional subject by students, and the Board gave them a concession that the children could pass in any of the six subjects, so that if they don t clear one subject, they could still clear the exam. The evaluation was also conducted with the help of people from the industry.” Additionally, 8,234 stu
dents availed of the sports merit marks, of which 372 passed the examination with the help of these marks thus contributing to 1.87 per cent of the overall passing percentage. Of the nearly 147 children with special needs from three schools – Sanjay Centre for Special Education, St Xavier s Academy and Lokvishwas Pratishthan s High School - who appeared for the exams, 135 were declared as passed. “The Board provides ample facilities to children with special needs, which include assistance of a writer and lenient correction, depending on their IQ. Every year, the number of special children appearing for the examination has been increasing,” said Rebello. Nearly 442 students opted for pre-vocational courses instead of maths, science or social science, and 93 per cent of these passed in the respective subjects. “All these four factors – introduction of NSQF, pre-vocational subjects, sports merit marks and increase in the number of children with special needs could have contributed to the increase in passing percentage,” Rebello pointed out. As far as the supply of scanned copies of answer books is concerned, it will be restricted to only two subjects – English and Science. “We will restrict the scanned copies to English and Science as they were evaluated using the digital evaluation method,” he said. The supplementary examination for students failing in one or two subjects will be held from June 20 to June 27. “We expect the results to be declared within 15 days as the students can join their higher secondary schools and not waste a year,” he said.
