A day after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane reprimanded the chief medical officer (CMO) of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) and ordered his immediate suspension, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday overruled the decision amid growing criticism of the minister’s conduct.
Taking on ‘X’, Sawant said he had reviewed the issue and assured that Dr Rudresh Kuttikar would not be suspended. “I have reviewed the issue at Goa Medical College and held discussions with the Health Minister. I want to assure the people of Goa that Dr Rudresh Kuttikar will not be suspended,” the Chief Minister said.
“The State government and our dedicated medical team remain fully committed to ensuring the highest standards of healthcare for every citizen. We also appreciate the tireless efforts and invaluable service of our doctors, who continue to save lives," he added.
The controversy erupted on Saturday when Rane visited GMC for an inspection and received a complaint against the CMO for allegedly refusing an injection to a patient, who was a senior citizen.
In a video, that went viral, the minister was seen scolding Dr Kuttikar. He directed the medical superintendent to issue a suspension order of the doctor saying “kick him out of here”.
Earlier, Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) had called for a public apology from Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, condemning his actions as "deeply unprofessional".
GARD had also sought a clear commitment from the government to ensure that no healthcare worker is ever subjected to such humiliating and arbitrary behaviour again. The association also urged a complete ban on videography—by anyone, including the press—within patient care areas at GMC, and has strongly opposed the continuation of VIP culture in clinical environments.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Goa, meanwhile urged chief minister to immediately dismiss Health Minister for his disgraceful and unacceptable conduct.
NSUI has also approached President of India Droupadi Murmu seeking immediate intervention for necessary directions to the State government.
NSUI has demanded immediate dismissal of the minister. “His (Rane’s) behaviour violates all standards of public conduct and sets a horrific example for young professionals and future leaders,” NSUI State president Naushad Chowdhari said.
Chowdhari said that the government inaction would reflect a dangerous tolerance for the misuse of power and open the door for further disrespect towards public servants and professionals.
The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association’s Goa chapter also expressed deep concern, saying the minister’s behaviour sets a dangerous precedent that could fuel hostility toward healthcare professionals.
