Saligao MLA Kedar Naik has proposed to place a suggestion before the next assembly session that farmers cultivating land owned by Comunidades be conferred with tenancy rights.
He also said that he would demand an increase in the amount of subsidy paid to farmers.
He was speaking at Pilerne after delivering fertilisers and seeds to farmers of Pilerne-Marra in the presence of Reis Magos ZP member Sandeep Bandodkar, Pilerne Sarpanch Reshma Bandodkar, Dy Sarpanch Ajay Govekar, Panchayat members Santosh Bandodkar and Ashvini Chodankar and Village Development Committee Convener Karan Govekar.
“In Goa, farmers presently cultivating land owned by Comunidade generally do not acquire ownership rights automatically. While the existing Goa, Daman and Diu Agricultural Tenancy Act provides certain protections and rights to tenants, it does not grant them automatic ownership of the land they cultivate,” said Naik.
“I will propose a suggestion before the ensuing assembly session requesting that tenants cultivating Comunidade lands be conferred with tenancy rights.”
Naik further mentioned that Pilerne-Marra panchayat has become Swayampurna in the true sense of the term in view of several activities undertaken by them.
“The Panchayat is not only encouraging farmers to cultivate their land by providing them fertilisers, seeds and tractors but is also engaged in horticultural activities,” said Naik.
“They have established a Goshala to take care of stray cattle by employing staff. The panchayat has also cleaned Nallahs by using JCB and have also hired one more tractor from Sangli to meet the requirement of farmers. If other panchayats in Goa also follow in the footsteps of Pillerne–Marra panchayat, then Goa would become Atma Nirbhar soon,” said Naik.
Dy Sarpanch Ajay Govekar said the panchayat has been distributing seed and fertilisers to farmers of Pilerne–Marra for several years.
“The panchayat also supplies tractors to needy farmers to cultivate their fields. These proactive steps encourages agricultural activities and supports farmers in keeping the village’s rich farming heritage alive,” he said.
ZP Member Sandeep Bandodkar urged farmers to cultivate fallow fields in the village. VDC Convener Karan Govekar later proposed the vote of thanks.
