The Goan Achiever

Magen Fernandes believes that art can turn pain into something beautiful. This Mumbai born Goan recently released an album ‘Talking to the Dead’ which is more than just a song – it’s a legacy. The song has received widespread positive feedback from respected voices in the industry. McCoy from Red FM, Gigi Till from India Today, and Dave Arrows, former editor of Rolling Stone India, have all reviewed it as a heartfelt tribute.

Originally started by late singer Cyril Fernandes, the song remained unfinished until after his passing. Cyril began writing this song titled ‘Talking to the Dead’ 16 years ago after losing his parents and his daughter Magen completed it last year after she lost him. Deciding to complete the song and give a closure to her father’s unfinished task, she not only succeeded in reaching out his dream to a larger audience but the song added to her own popularity too. Listeners have particularly connected with how she blended her late father’s voice with hers — keeping his memory, his sound, and his legacy alive.

“It’s a tribute to him. A respected singer in Goa and Mumbai, he collaborated with reputed musicians and performed alongside legends like Braz Gonsalves. His contributions to gospel albums are unforgettable and his songs on life, nature and truth are listened with awe even today. Completing the song was both painful and healing – it became my way of honouring him,” shares Magen who lost him last year, and returning to his unfinished words, completed the song as a catharsis.

Magen’s contribution in Goa and Mumbai is not restricted to music alone. It’s beyond music and artistry. She has represented Goa and India at national and international pageants, bringing recognition back home. Her journey from Miss Queen of West India (2015) to Mrs India Global (2021) and now being the first runner up, representing India at Mrs Glam World (2024) was challenging. This Goan artist with multiple creative pursuits is also a professional bridal hair and makeup artist, entrepreneur, and MC.

Born in a Goan–Anglo-Indian family, her grandparents had moved out of Goa decades ago but they never let go of their roots. Magen’s grandfather taught violin at Pilerne, and her childhood was filled with trips back to Goa – for weddings, summer vacations, and community gatherings. “Those experiences gave me a strong sense of belonging and shaped much of who I am today,” admits Magen who now lives in Goa, at Parra.

A singer-songwriter, model, entrepreneur, and bridal hair and makeup artist, Magen has been running ‘The Bombshell Makeovers’ – a dedicated bridal hair and makeup service. Trained at Christine Valmy, an American Institute of Cosmetology, Magen has been working with brides, models, and celebrities. Her work focuses on brown-skin beauty. Among her clients is Aashka Goradia, the owner of Renee Cosmetics. Magen who has worked on campaigns, ads, and fashion shoots, remains passionate about bridal artistry, “There’s nothing like the joy of making a bride feel her most beautiful on her wedding day.”

As a model, she has walked the ramp for fashion shows, including the Goa Tourism Show (2013). She has also been featured in advertising campaigns and featured on Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Femina magazine. Pageants have been another important chapter of her journey. Magen won Miss Queen of West India (2015), was crowned Mrs India Global 2021, and became First Runner-Up at Mrs Glam World 2024.

Recently, she stepped into a new role as a judge — at Miss Queen of India 2025. She will also judge Mrs Glam World 2025. “It feels like a full-circle moment, moving from contestant to mentor, and now guiding the next generation of women to shine on stage,” she feels.

Calling herself a coastal baby, with roots spread across Kerala, Goa, and Maharashtra, she admires the sea, the churches, the choirs and the village squares as they shaped her sound. “Inspired by the beauty of coastal India, I try to present a new spin on Indian music, weaving my influences into heartfelt, contemporary storytelling.

Beyond music, Magen has worked as an emcee, RJ, and creative director, often handling everything from concept design to costumes and sets for her own projects. Creativity is limitless, and she refuses to restrict herself to one path. At 34 her goals remain big. Wanting to keep creating, expanding her beauty business, and releasing more music that speaks truth, she wants to be a true representative of both Goa and India.

For her, every part of her journey – from beauty and fashion to music and pageants – is tied together by one belief: art can transform pain into something beautiful. “That’s the legacy I inherited from my father, and it’s the legacy I intend to keep alive,” concludes Magen.
