The internal road going to Madel ward in Fatorda caved in on Thursday, disrupting traffic along the busy road.

Locals blamed the authorities for digging up the road to lay cables and pipes, including a water pipeline and for not restoring the road as per the norms.

The area turned into a water pool after an underground water pipeline ruptured. The authorities later deployed manpower to repair the pipeline.

The Madel internal road starts from the Holy Cross Chapel on the Margao-Colva road and has turned out the main road for people travelling towards the KTC bus stand and the wholesale fish market.

Agitated local residents blamed the authorities as well as the contractors engaged by the agencies for executing shoddy work after lying cables and pipes.

A resident Milagres Fernandes said the government should take serious cognisance of the works being carried out by the contractors to restore the roads after digging. “The authorities should take action against the contractors. The Madel internal road only plays host to light vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers. But, it is indeed shocking that the road has caved in. This only goes to show that the road was not restored properly after excavation”, he added.
