Twenty days after her house came crashing down due to heavy rains on 14th July, retired Home Guard Vimal Shirodkar has finally got a new shelter at Sirvodem, thanks to a philanthropist.

Perhaps for the first time in recent times, the district Disaster Management Authority has also sanctioned financial relief to Vimal amounting to Rs two lakh.

Margao MLA Digambar Kamat pointed out that the house has been rebuilt with funding by a philanthropist at his initiative, adding that the relief sanctioned by the disaster management authority will go directly into Vimal’s account.

Accompanied by Margao Municipal Ward Councillor Mahesh Amonkar, the Margao MLA visited Sirvodem on Saturday to hand over the keys of the house to Vimal. He later told the media that he got a philanthropist to rebuild Vimal’s house after seeing her plight after she was left homeless in the natural calamity.

“Vimal knows Digambar Kamat will fulfil his word. I am not bothered about those who made an issue. I still remember an instance wherein a rider had driven over her leg and the then Deputy Collector Sanjit Rodrigues chased the rider at Navelim and got him to apologise to Vimal,” he said.

Taking pot shots at the Congress and without naming names, Kamat said, “Some had come here for advertisement to open an account. Even the MP had come here. I do not know the objective behind all this.”

The Margao MLA said the entire cost of the one-room house has been borne by a philanthropist who accepted my request to build the house.
