Rash and negligent driving by tourists – often under the influence of alcohol – continues to pose a serious threat on Goan roads, with yet another incident reported from Siolim-Marna on Wednesday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of tourists driving a Thar jeep recklessly rammed into a two-wheeler ridden by a local woman, who had her minor child as a pillion. Both sustained injuries in the collision.
Shockingly, the tourist driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the accident but was chased and apprehended by local residents.
Residents claimed that several beer bottles were found inside the Thar, suggesting possible intoxication. However, no police case was registered after both parties reportedly reached a compromise.
A police official confirmed that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the tourist driving the Thar jeep, who hit the two-wheeler from behind.
“It was clearly the fault of the Thar driver. We intended to register a case and impose a fine for rash driving. However, the victim and local residents chose not to pursue the matter further and settled it amicably on the spot,” the official said.
Locals have expressed growing concern over the increasing number of accidents involving tourists, many of whom are seen driving at high speed or under the influence, particularly in beach belt areas such as Anjuna, Vagator, and Siolim.
They have urged authorities to strictly enforce road safety rules and check drunken driving to prevent further tragedies.
With Goa witnessing a steady rise in road mishaps linked to rash tourist driving, citizens fear that the State’s scenic roads are fast turning unsafe for local commuters and pedestrians alike.
