Having successfully resolved 60 cases in the past six months, the Goa State Commission for Women (GSCW) is taking proactive steps to clear the backlog that accumulated due to delays in appointing a new committee.
GSCW Chairperson Ranjita Pai has decided to increase the number of weekly hearings from the current 12-14 to 20 starting in May.
During the last half-year period, the Commission resolved 60 cases with around 424 cases currently at different stages of hearing. Pai said that many of these are nearing the final stages of the hearing process. It is learnt that at least 120 cases will be disposed of in the next couple of weeks.
“We have already expedited the hearing process. To ensure further speedy disposal, we will increase the weekly hearings to 20 starting May, from the current 12-14 held weekly,” she said, speaking to The Goan.
Since assuming the charge as GSCW Chairperson in March 2023, Pai had to wait for a certain time as a fully constituted committee was not in place until October.
Pai emphasized that they are giving every case “special priority”.
Initially, the Commission began hearing 10 cases per designated hearing day a week and this number increased to 12-14 hearings per week. Mondays are specifically reserved for handling grievances of aggrieved parties to provide accessible avenues for justice.
