Work in progress for the Porvorim Town Square.
PORVORIM
Work is in progress for the proposed Porvorim Town Square, regarded as one of its kind in the country, but not many may be aware that the land had initially been earmarked for three private commercial complexes.
The project, which is being developed on 11,000 sq. mtrs by the side of the Service Road near the Porvorim fire station, is estimated to cost Rs 120.97 crore, of which Rs 90.74 crore is funded by the central government and Rs 35.32 crore by the State government. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
The Porvorim Town Square has been planned as Goa’s first-of-its-kind integrated civic space, featuring thematic zones such as the Market Court, Welcome Court, Fountain Court, Movie Court, Heritage Court, Ashoka Stambh, and a Clock Tower, creating space for people to gather, perform and connect.
Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the land was originally earmarked for three private commercial complexes by the Goa Housing Board, which owned the land.
“I had opposed this project especially since then chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had promised that no further commercial development would occur in the area, recognising its already saturated condition and keeping in mind its proximity to other high people density buildings like Mall de Goa,” said Khaunte.
The State government then revoked the allotments and handed over the land to the tourism department.
The minister said the Porvorim Town Square will also serve as a state-level venue for cultural festivities and official celebrations.
