Goa govt cancels state events after Shirgao jatra stampede kills 6

PANAJI: Following the tragic stampede at the Shree Devi Lairai jatra in Shirgao that killed six and injured over 80, the Goa government has cancelled/postponed all state-supported events and celebrations for the next three days.

A notification issued states: “All Government-supported festive programmes and public celebrations scheduled over the next three days be cancelled or postponed.” It added that all departments and autonomous bodies must ensure strict compliance.

The stampede occurred around 4:00–4:30 am today as thousands gathered for a fire ritual. Panic broke out on a slope near the ceremonial fire, triggering a sudden crowd surge. Eyewitnesses blamed overcrowding and poor crowd control.

Despite the deployment of over 1000 police personnel, some devotees accused authorities of inaction. North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said the panic may have been sparked by rumours, adding that evacuating nearly 50,000 people was the biggest challenge.

Temple Committee President Dinanath Gaonkar said the incident seemed provoked from within the crowd and urged better crowd regulation in future.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed six deaths, including a 17-year-old, and said 22 injured remain under treatment.
