The Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), the social work wing of the Archdiocese of Goa, has expressed grief over the tragedy at the Shirgao Zatra in the wee hours of Saturday.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic stampede at the Shree Lairai Devi Temple, for the annual Shree Lairai Zatra, in Shirgao, which claimed the precious lives of six devotees and left more than eighty injured,” stated CSJP Executive Secretary Fr Savio Fernandes.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families who lost their loved ones in this devastating incident. We pray for strength and healing for all those affected and for swift recovery of the injured.”
“The Catholic Church in Goa grieves with those who are grieving during this difficult time.” “It is also important to reflect on the causes of what precipitated the first of its kind incident in Goa and take precautionary measures to avoid such devastating episodes,” Fr Fernandes added.
