
PANAJI: Meat traders in Goa will now be required to register with the Animal Husbandry Department, a move aimed at improving regulation, traceability, and compliance with animal welfare norms.
The decision follows a meeting with the Goa State Animal Welfare Board, chaired by CM Pramod Sawant yesterday, attended by Animal Husbandry Minister Nilkant Halarnkar and Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai. The Chief Minister announced a set of initiatives on X to strengthen animal welfare across the State. These measures are designed to ensure humane treatment of animals, enhance public health and safety, and reinforce regulatory oversight.
Key initiatives include the deployment of police personnel to assist in lawful and humane impounding of stray cattle, compulsory sterilisation and vaccination of domestic dogs, the introduction of Mobile Sterilisation Units to expand outreach in remote areas, and mandatory registration of meat traders to ensure traceability and compliance with welfare standards.
The Goa State Animal Welfare Board reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding animal welfare while upholding public health and safety.
