After an intensive search operation for nearly 24 hours, the body of a youth who had reportedly jumped into the Zuari river from the Sanvordem bridge was retrieved at about 2.30 am on Tuesday.
According to sources, the youth, identified as Sandeep Naik of Cacora-Curchorem had allegedly jumped into the river on Sunday night and had been missing since then.
This triggered a search operation by personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, Curchorem Police and Navy divers, after his two wheeler was found parked near Sanvordem bridge.
Local residents had gathered near the bridge soon after the incident was reported.
Officials stated that the search operation was suspended on Monday night due to darkness and resumed on Tuesday morning with the assistance of rescue teams and divers. The body was finally traced and recovered from the river on Monday morning after it was found floating in the river.
The body was later shifted for postmortem examination while police initiated further investigation into the incident.
The tragic episode has once again raised concerns among locals over the need for enhanced safety measures and protective railings on the Sanvordem bridge to prevent such incidents in future as there has been recurring deaths in the area.
Earlier last month, another youth from Kamral-Curchorem had ended his life by jumping into the river at the same bridge. Similar incidences were also reported last year.
