A 55-year-old woman was murdered in her house at Chikane-Kudnem in Bicholim taluka on Tuesday afternoon.
A youth from Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, who is known to the family, has been accused of murdering the woman after he allegedly fled the scene carrying the mobile phone of the deceased woman and used that phone to contact family members to report the crime.
According to reports, Shaila Sanjay Ghadi (55) lived in Chikane-Kudne along with her three children, two elder daughters and a younger son.
It is learned that the accused, Sagar Rawal, was a friend of one of the daughters and regularly visited their house. Frequent disputes and quarrels reportedly took place between him and the family members.
In one earlier incident, Rawal had allegedly vandalised the house by damaging windows and household items, following which a complaint had been lodged against him at the Bicholim police station.
Despite these ongoing disputes, Rawal went to Ghadi’s house on Tuesday afternoon. It is believed that an argument broke out between Rawal and Ghadi. During the altercation, Rawal is alleged to have smashed Ghadi’s head against a wall, resulting in her death.
After committing the act, the accused allegedly took the woman’s mobile phone and fled the scene. Later, using the same phone, he reportedly called her daughters and informed them about what he had done. This alerted the family members to the incident, and the police were notified.
DySP Shridevi B V, Police Inspector Vijay Rane, Sub-Inspector Akash Parwar, Woman Sub-Inspector Archana Sharma, and other police personnel visited the scene and conducted a detailed inquiry.
Police investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly stolen the gold chain worn by the deceased before fleeing. The police registered the matter as a murder case. A mobile forensic team and dog squad were also deployed at the scene, and necessary evidence was collected by both teams. Investigation into the case continued through various leads late into the night.
