The Cyber Crime Police Station arrested a 65-year-old man from Mumbai for allegedly defrauding a Margao-based complainant of Rs 1.52 crore through a fake online investment scheme promising high returns.
Police said that the accused, identified as Ronnie Philip Sequeira, a resident of Borivali (West), Mumbai. Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta stated that the accused was arrested after a detailed financial and technical investigation traced fraudulent transactions linked to his bank account.
"We found Rs 35 lakh was routed through Sequeira’s bank account, and preliminary findings suggest that he and his wife are involved in similar frauds in at least two other States," the officer said.
The case, registered based on a complaint from the local, alleged the scamsters used multiple foreign and Indian mobile and WhatsApp numbers and induced him to invest in an online trading scheme by promising substantial returns. When the complainant sought to withdraw the invested amount, the fraudsters reportedly demanded additional payments under the pretext of processing fees, leading to a total loss of Rs 1.52 crore.
