PANAJI
After a long wait, the new state-of-the-art Captain of Ports building on the Panaji riverfront is likely to be inaugurated on Goa Statehood Day, May 30.
Addressing reporters on Monday, GSIDC Chairman Michael Lobo said the nearly Rs 49-crore project is in its final stages and will house all offices of the Captain of Ports Department under one roof. “The project is almost ready for inauguration. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is keen to launch the facility on the Goa Statehood Day this month,” Lobo said.
The legislator stated that the riverfront complex has a total built-up area of 4,405 sq mtrs and has been designed as a modern public infrastructure facility with tourist-friendly amenities. Moreover, the building includes ticketing counters, lifts, waiting areas, conference halls, administrative offices, restaurants, and public facilities overlooking the riverfront.
“We have created a common ticketing system to stop touting and ensure uniform rates for passengers and tourists,” he said.
The GSIDC Chairman said the project had faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and issues related to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), but added that the work is now nearing completion.
Clarifying concerns over casino operations in the area, Lobo said the project was not meant for casinos.
“This is not a building for casinos. Casinos are already operating nearby. This project has been developed by the Goa government through GSIDC to improve tourism infrastructure and provide better public facilities with an international-standard experience,” he said.
