Opposition targets govt, MLA over inclusion of Canacona in Kushavati district

Political leaders and activists came together at a meeting in Shristhal-Canacona to denounce the move to include Canacona in the newly formed Kushavati district.

CANACONA
Opposition leaders and activists have warned the government not to take the people of Canacona for granted by including the taluka in the new Kushavati district without public consent.
Speaking at a meeting in Shristhal-Canacona, Goa Forward Party General Secretary Mohandas Lolienkar questioned Sports Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar for speaking on behalf of the people of Canacona.
“We all are saying that the government has not taken the people of Canacona into confidence, but our MLA Tawadkar says the government had taken him into confidence before declaring the formation of Khushavati district and the inclusion of Canacona taluka in this district,” said Lolienkar.
“Our MLA is of the opinion that since he is the elected representative, the government, through him, also took the people of Canacona taluka into confidence. The MLA informed that he has no problem or difficulty, and so, people in Canacona taluka should not have difficulty in accepting the inclusion of Canacona taluka in Kushavati district,” Lolienkar said. “Don’t take people of Canacona for granted regarding the new Kushavati District,” warned Lolienkar.
Speakers appealed to all panchayats in Canacona taluka to pass resolutions before a mega public meeting is organised against the inclusion of Canacona in Kushavati District.
The gathering later passed a unanimous resolution strongly opposing the inclusion of Canacona in the newly established Kushavati district, considering the difficulties that the general public of Canacona would face with its inclusion in the third district.
“We further request the government to reconsider its decision, and Canacona taluka should be removed from the new district and retained in South Goa District. We strongly warn the government that if it does not accept the demands, it will face strong agitation,” the resolution added.
Incidentally, except for two panch members and some former sarpanches and panchas, no other sitting panch, sarpanch, councillor, ZP member, or even Tawadkar attended the meeting, after being invited to present their views on the formation and inclusion of Canacona taluka in the Kushavati district.
Anant Agni, Prashant Pagi, Sandesh Telekar, Janardhan Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat, Anil Phaldesai, Shailesh Pagui, Mohandas Lolienkar, Pankaj Namshikar, Manuel Barretto, Prashant Naik and Vaibhav Phaldesai were among those present at the meeting.
