In the wake of two recent incidents involving structural failures in government schools — one involving a false ceiling collapse and another a falling ceiling fan — Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao has demanded an immediate structural audit of all government-run educational institutions across Goa.
Alemao has raised alarm over student safety in Goa’s schools, blaming hurried repairs, negligence, and corruption for recent accidents. “I appeal, Education Minister, to immediately undertake a structural audit of all schools to ensure students’ safety,” he said.
Alemao pointed out that the opposition had, in the past, brought to the notice of the government the sub-standard renovation and repair works of schools undertaken by contractors. “The government needs to take strict action against the contractors,” he demanded.
He also charged that the incidents prove the opposition’s charge that the government is focused on “mission total commission”.
His remark comes after a girl student was injured in Poriem when a ceiling fan fell on her on Thursday, followed by five students from Sanguem Higher Secondary School getting injured due to a false ceiling collapse.
