Money isn’t evil – Ignorance about it is

Money is the root of all evil, I was told. When I stopped believing that, I was told the love of money is the root of all evil. That’s how most of us were brought up. I shunned the pursuit of money, and what I did have, I spent. Saving was for losers — that was what I thought. I ignored career growth, turned my back on opportunities, and lived pay cheque to pay cheque, sometimes in debt, sometimes not. I thought I was avoiding stress and risk.

But I had been led down the garden path by those who do have money — those who control us from the top, engineer wars, shape education, and define good and evil. The dynamics of the financial world are complex, and we are trapped in this cesspool without knowing it. I was being controlled by the system — and didn’t even realise it.

You might be, too. Thankfully, I escaped that trap of financial illiteracy and now pursue money with purpose. It’s not my main goal, but it has made life much easier and more enjoyable. The real goal remains — to be there for our loved ones, come rain or shine, and draw strength from our families.

Back to money — if you're living from pay cheque to pay cheque, something needs to change. Fortunately, life offers simple solutions to big problems. You can achieve financial freedom while enjoying the things you love and securing your future. Here are five steps — they work even if you're on minimum wage: 1. Save — keep three months’ worth of living costs in an easy-access, high-interest savings account; 2. Invest — avoid get-rich-quick schemes; opt for low-risk global index funds. Most importantly, invest in yourself; 3. Spend less — avoid spending for its own sake. Cut unnecessary expenses; 4. Earn more — change jobs or try a side hustle; 5. Time — compound interest is powerful. Invest regularly and give it time.

If you invest in tracking the top 500 Indian companies, you could average 10% returns yearly. Your money could double in 10 years, quadruple in 20. So, what’s stopping you? Take back control. Start now.
