Preserving the sanctity of festivals in Goa

In the past, Ganesh idol immersion processions in Goa were marked by devotion and simplicity. Families would take their idols for immersion with devotional aartis, traditional percussion, and chants of “Bappa Morya” that uplifted the spirit without disturbing the peace of others. In recent times, however, some processions have changed in character. The use of loud, amplified music and noisy, polluting fireworks during immersions has become common. While enthusiasm is natural in festivals, such practices often disturb residents, especially senior citizens and those with health conditions. Excessive noise also affects the environment, creating stress for both people and animals. Goa is known for celebrating its diverse religious festivals with respect and harmony. To maintain this spirit, it is important that festivities remain mindful of the community. Religious occasions are best celebrated with devotion, togetherness, and cultural pride, not with noise levels that resemble a street party. Let us preserve the sanctity and uniqueness of our festivals by celebrating them in a way that brings joy without causing discomfort to others. If we can combine devotion with consideration, our festivals will continue to be a source of pride for all Goans. May good sense prevail...
