Calangute MLA Michael Lobo brought up the issue, in the Assembly, of glass pieces on beaches causing serious injuries to tourists. I have witnessed several such cases on Calangute beach.
Govt is mulling sale of beer in cans. But while beer may be sold in cans, it will not be possible to sell alcohol in plastic bottles, except for some brands.
It is also proposed to introduce a deposit scheme for glass bottles, which can be claimed by returning the bottle to the seller. Such a scheme failed miserably in Mumbai as shops do not give receipts. As a result there were regular arguments about where the bottles were purchased.
Strict enforcement of the law is the only solution. Drinking in public places is an offense. The police personnel must use a megaphone at the entrance of the beach to inform tourists that drinking on the beach is an offense.
Tourists must be fined for not following the law. Those who wish to drink on the beach may patronize the shacks.
