Politicians should stop filling paddy fields

Adelmo Fernandes, Vasco | JULY 22, 2025, 12:08 AM IST

Of late, Goans have been coming across news items of several politicians stepping into the fields and transplanting paddy seedlings. It is learnt that this is being done in order to encourage families to restart cultivation on fallow land. It comes as a surprise that these politicians have decided to dirty their hands in the mud. Whether this is being done for a photo-op or otherwise is best left to one’s judgement. Be that as it may, illegal landfilling continues in several areas, causing environmental concerns and drawing complaints from locals. Patches of cultivable areas are being reclaimed by dumping truckloads of mud. This not only violates environmental laws but also affects the ecological balance of the region. The unauthorised dumping of debris and soil is a clear infringement of multiple regulations. Landfilling of fields in Goa for real estate development is a contentious issue, raising concerns about environmental damage and the loss of agricultural land. While some view it as necessary for progress, others argue it threatens Goa’s unique ecosystem and heritage.
