BJP needs to tackle corruption in its ranks

KG VILOP, Chorao | JUNE 23, 2025, 11:50 PM IST

The Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude had been sacked from the state cabinet due to his allegation of corruption in tribal welfare department. In a speech at a public function, Gaude had spoken of irregularities and corruption in the functioning of the tribal affairs department. He had also faced severe criticism over the Art and Culture department’s renovation of the iconic Kala Academy. The move was also attacked over complaints that the ₹55 crore renovation had been awarded without following the due tender process.  Although he was never removed when there were allegations of corruption against him.  Whenever the BJP speaks against corruption, it seems as if Osama Bin Laden and Gabbar Singh are preaching non-violence.  There has never been an election campaign in India where corruption has not been highlighted as a political and an economic issue. VP Singh’s highly successful campaign in the late 1980s to portray the then PM Rajiv Gandhi, as corrupt saw the Congress government that had the largest ever majority in the Lok Sabha being electorally defeated.  What is missing is a deeper understanding of why corruption takes place.
